SkyGames® - the test of champions
Already more than 500 athletes from 20 countries have signed up for three days of vertical thrills at the Trentino SkyGames® from July 18-20 in the fabulous Italian Dolomites.
July 10, 2008
Three days of high altitude sport to take your breath away. That’s the promise at the Trentino SkyGames® where some of the world’s top skyrunners will compete in four different events for the SkyGames® Champion title: skyrunning’s new star, 2007 Skyrunning World Champion, 20 year-old Catalan Killian Jornet; Italian Marco De Gasperi, ace Skyrunner and five times World Mountain Running Champion; New Zealander, Jonathan Wyatt, also World Mountain Running Champion; Agustì Roc from Andorra, three-times Skyrunning World Champion; and Skyrunning World Champions Corinne Favre from France and Britain’s Rob Jebb.
An exhilarating event is guaranteed with an impressive line-up of world champions battling for the title. The SkyGames® in fact represent the highest level of uphill human performance at altitude. Jornet holds the world 1,000m ascent record: 31’52” on an artificial course while De Gasperi holds the same ascent record on a ski run, 34’51”, the equivalent of 1,700-1,800 vertical metres per hour!
The Vertical Kilometer® on Friday, July 18, in fact, represents the champions’ first challenge: 1,000m vertical climb, 2,100m distance with an incline of more than 40%. And another world record?
Two races are programmed for Saturday, July 19 – the SkyBike® race, a 16 km duathlon with 1,800m vertical climb from Canazei to the Marmolada with gear change at the Fedaia Pass.
Agustí Roc (right) and Neus Parceresas (below), Spannish SkyBike® Champion at the 2006 SkyGames®) are among the élite.
For those with breath to spare, the SkySpeed® race will take place in the afternoon – 100 vertical metres with a maximum incline of 45%. Athletes are divided in groups of five.
Sunday, July 20. The Dolomites SkyRace® with more than 500 participants already entered, this spectacular 22 km skyrunning race starts and finishes in the town of Canazei. Undoubtedly one of the most dramatic scenarios in the skyrunning calendar, the course ascends and descends through gorges and couloirs, touching the dizzy heights of the Piz Boè at 3,152m. The total vertical climb is 2,000m.
Four skyrunning disciplines but only one SkyGames® title. The men’s and women’s title is awarded on the basis of the best points accrued in three of the races. A SkyGames® Team title is also at stake together with 30 medals and a prize purse of € 25,000.
Highlighting the prestige of theevent, the founding assembly for the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) will take place in Canazei on Saturday with the participation of 13 national sports federations and a number of members of the UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federaton) recognized by the IOC.
